CAMDEN,
LONDON NW1

This roof extension to a maisonette provides an additional living space with shower room - which becomes a comfortable guest bedroom with en-suite, bags of storage, and a south facing terrace.
The design had to be sensitive to the historic context of the building and street. Indeed from the northern street facade, the new roof extension followed the council's conservation design guidance to the letter: a hung slate mansard roof, lead clad dormers with traditionally styled sliding sash windows.
Glazing was maximised to flood both the new room and stairwell with light. The remaining solid elements facing the terrace were clad in western red cedar battens, chosen for visual warmth and laid to accentuate the roof line and columns.
